Each day in the US, animal shelters are forced to destroy 30,000 dogs and cats.

Don't Let Your Dog Down
You aren't a dog owner just at Christmas, or on the weekends, or in the afternoon, or when you have spare time. You aren't a dog owner just when the dog is behaving, or when he's a cute fuzzy puppy, or when he's winning awards. When you bring a dog into your family, that dog is yours for life. If you can't keep that commitment, don't make it. And once you've made it, don't break it. Your dog's life depends on you.

Hot Dog Sandwich Anyone?

Are Dachshunds really "Hot Dogs"? You bet. A healthy Dachshund has a body temperature of 101.5F (38.6C). Good to know on a cold winter night. They make great Bed Heaters!

It has been established that people who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks.

Have you heard the saying "Dog Days of Summer" ?

The term "dog days" has nothing to do with dogs. It dates back to Roman times, when it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, added its heat to that of the sun from July3 to August 11, creating exceptionally high temperatures. The Romans called the period dies caiculares, or "days of the dog."

Dachshunds remains in the Top 10 of dog breeds. Not bad for a critter with such short legs.

The dachshund is one of the oldest dog breeds in history (dating back to ancient Egypt.) The name comes from one of its earliest uses - hunting badgers. In German, Dachs means "badger," Hund is "hound."

A Dachshund was used to hunt Badgers!

Can you believe this is what the dachshund hunted for?

The Dachshund was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers (dachs, badger;hund, dog).

From 1930 to 1940, Dachshunds advanced from 28th to 6th rank among American registrations, and maintain this average rank through WW II by constructive public relations.

Dachshunds are bred with three coat varieties: (1) Smooth, (2) Long, and (3) Wirehaired, and are shown in two sizes: standard and miniature.

Dachshunds are accomplished hunting dogs despite their lapdog reputations.

In the postwar years, to avoid associations with Germany, the Dachshund's name was temporarily translated to "badger dog."

The medium-sized, smooth-haired Dachshund predominates in America.
